In support of Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water), Western Philippines University (WPU), through its College of Fisheries and Natural Sciences (CFiNS), conducted a Seminar-Workshop on Sustainable Sea Cucumber Fishery on December 18, 2024, in Barangay Tagburos, Puerto Princesa City, Palawan.

The research-informed extension activity aimed to strengthen community awareness of responsible sea cucumber harvesting, sustainable fisheries management, and the importance of conserving marine resources that support coastal livelihoods.

Sea cucumbers are valuable marine resources in Palawan, providing income opportunities for coastal fisherfolk. However, increasing market demand and harvesting pressure have raised concerns about the sustainability of natural sea cucumber populations, highlighting the need for improved resource management and community education.

The seminar-workshop brought together local fisherfolk, barangay representatives, and other community stakeholders to discuss the current status of sea cucumber fisheries, sustainable harvesting methods, and appropriate post-harvest processing techniques.

Led by WPU faculty and extension personnel, the sessions covered responsible collection practices, including appropriate harvesting sizes, as well as processing techniques such as cleaning, blanching, drying, and smoking. Participants also engaged in discussions on fisheries management challenges and practical approaches to protecting sea cucumber populations while maintaining livelihood opportunities.

Through this initiative, WPU demonstrated its commitment to bringing fisheries education closer to coastal communities and encouraging responsible utilization of aquatic resources.

The activity contributes to SDG 14, by promoting sustainable harvesting practices, responsible fisheries management, and the conservation of marine biodiversity.

By connecting scientific knowledge with community participation, Western Philippines University continues to serve as a strong partner for sustainable development, helping coastal communities protect marine resources for present and future generations.
