Western Philippines University (WPU) reinforces its environmental sustainability commitment. This is realized after the WPU Board of Regents approved the university’s Land Use Development and Infrastructure Plan (LUDIP) in a resolution titled “Approving the LUDIP of Western Philippines University.” The plan provides a framework for the responsible utilization, development, and management of university lands, supporting the conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems across its campuses.
The LUDIP incorporates environmental and geographical assessments of vegetative cover, land contours, drainage systems, flood risks, general land use, land tenure, and climate and disaster-related hazards. It also includes cadastral surveys of university campuses, branches, and idle lands, alongside geographical surveys of areas designated for agriculture, fisheries, forestry, commercial activities, and other institutional purposes. These assessments support informed land-use decisions that consider existing environmental conditions, potential risks, and the long-term sustainability of university-managed properties.
The plan reflects the university’s responsibility to balance infrastructure development with the protection of natural resources, including forests, agricultural lands, and other terrestrial environments. By integrating environmental considerations into campus planning and land allocation, WPU establishes a basis for minimizing environmental risks, protecting vegetative cover, and promoting the sustainable use of land for education, research, and institutional development.
This commitment is also aligned with the development vision of the Province of Palawan, recognized as the Philippines’ last ecological frontier. The provincial vision aspires to establish a premier province where empowered communities and a progressive economy thrive in harmony with a balanced environment and rich natural resources, supported by appropriate and efficiently managed infrastructure. WPU’s land-use planning contributes to this broader direction by incorporating environmental protection and responsible resource management into its institutional development.
In her message, WPU President Dr. Amabel S. Liao emphasized the importance of integrating land use and infrastructure planning into the university’s growth and sustainability, stating: “Land use development and infrastructure planning are essential components of a university’s growth and sustainability. Proper utilization of land resources and well-planned infrastructure not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the campus but also provides conducive environment for learning, research, and innovation.”
Through its BOR-approved LUDIP, Western Philippines University establishes an institutional framework for balancing campus development with environmental stewardship. The plan supports the responsible management of university lands and provides a planning basis for protecting terrestrial ecosystems while ensuring that land and infrastructure development contributes to the university’s long-term sustainability and its commitment to Palawan’s environmental future.
