HISTORY

The long and colorful history of the college began on March 5, 2004, when the State Polytechnic College of Palawan was converted to Western Philippines University by virtue of Republic Act 9260. With this law, the institution was reorganized and the organizational structure was modified; the Institute of Arts and Sciences in Aborlan Campus was renamed the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), and this became the umbrella college where the Bachelor of Science in Criminology (thru approved BOR Res. No. 22 series of 2004, dated June 15, 2004) was first offered.

This was headed by Dr. Susan M. Gauran as its first ever Dean and in 2005, Ms. Maria Dulce Amor P. Bunquin was appointed as its second Dean. Ms. Lily R. Ocapan then took over and served as a Dean until 2011 until she was replaced by Dr. Lita Sopsop. The Criminology program existed as a mere department under the CAS during the entire period.

Almost simultaneously, the program was also offered on the Puerto Princesa campus under the College of Arts Sciences and Technology (CAST). Ms. Arlyn Avillanosa served as the first Dean, and Dr. David R. Perez took over after her term expired.

It started producing graduates in 2008, and by 2009, it had bagged the Top Performing School for Criminology Award for the University, which was given by the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC). It has also produced topnotchers in the Board Licensure Examination for Criminologists (BLEC) during the years 2011, 2012 and 2014 and regional topnotchers on 2023. Pursuant to the implementation of vertical articulation in June 2013, the College of Criminal Justice Education (CCJE) was created with Criminology as its sole curricular offering.  The college has two campuses offering a full criminology program, the Puerto Princesa Campus as the main campus and the other in Aborlan, Palawan. Dr. David R. Perez was appointed as the first Dean of the College until March 2016; by July 2016 he was succeeded by Dean Francisco R. Reblando, and on February 2017-March 10, 2024 Mr. Maphilindo D. Lao, as the third Dean, and March 11, 2024 Dr. Sheila Lou G. Pili was designated as the current Dean.
