Western Philippines University (WPU) underscored its commitment to sustainability and community engagement by showing its support during the opening of the “Kalayaan Handog ng Kalikasan” exhibit on August 23, 2023, at SM City Puerto Princesa. The event, hosted by the Kalayaan municipal government, provided a unique opportunity to deepen public awareness about the ecological and cultural significance of the West Philippine Sea, a region critical to biodiversity and local heritage.

The exhibit, attended by key stakeholders, including WPU Acting President Atty. Joselito Alisuag, is part of a collaborative effort to introduce the public to the remarkable marine ecosystems and indigenous heritage of the Kalayaan Group of Islands. Featuring educational standees and immersive virtual experiences, the showcase serves as a window into life on the islands and supports Kalayaan’s eco-tourism initiatives.

WPU’s participation reflects its mission to foster environmental stewardship, support sustainable resource management, and promote regional development, which aligns directly with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 14 (Life Below Water) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities). The university’s dedication to these goals is evident in its ongoing support for initiatives highlighting the sustainable use and conservation of marine resources.

By engaging with projects like “Kalayaan Handog ng Kalikasan”, WPU actively contributes to preserving biodiversity and heritage in Palawan. The exhibit, which runs through September, exemplifies WPU’s commitment to educating communities and supporting collaborative efforts for a sustainable future in the West Philippine Sea.
