Western Philippines University emerged as one of the standout performers in the World Pangolin Day Celebration Competition, clinching top awards across multiple categories and showcasing both academic excellence and creative advocacy for wildlife conservation.

In the Quiz Bee, WPU bagged the Championship title through the team of Yuan Kirsten Ynciong (3rd Year BS Fisheries), Gerlie Supe (2nd Year BS Marine Biology), and Andrei Sanchez (4th Year BS Aquatic Biology). Their strong grasp of biodiversity, conservation science, and environmental issues secured the top spot in the competition.

Also earning Consolation Prize Awards were Joey Cajolo (1st Year BS Aquatic Biology), Aiza Villacanas (1st Year BS Fisheries), Justine Lazarte (1st Year BS Fisheries), Adrian Merced (2nd Year BS Marine Biology), Cate Jhamaica Sarmiento (2nd Year BS Fisheries), and Gian Carlo Oriel (2nd Year BS Marine Biology).

In the Spoken Word Poetry category, Ron Gabriel Se (2nd Year BS Marine Biology) claimed the 2nd Runner-up title, delivering a compelling performance that highlighted the urgent call to protect pangolins and preserve biodiversity.

WPU likewise excelled in the Digital Arts competition, with Kate J. Abrea (1st Year BS Marine Biology) emerging as Winner, while Anneliese V. Lasam (1st Year BS Marine Biology) received a Consolation Prize for her creative and advocacy-driven artwork.

The recently concluded World Pangolin Day last February 27 was organized by the Subcommittee on Pangolin Conservation and Management (SPCM) under the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development Staff Environment and Natural Resources Committee. This year’s observance was hosted by Palawan State University in partnership with Katala Foundation, WPU, Holy Trinity University, Conservation International Philippines, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (City ENRO), Environmental Legal Assistance Center, the Guardians of the Palawan Pangolin Guild (GPPG), and the Palawan Taxonomic Guild (PTG) Officers.
