Western Philippines University (WPU) recently conducted a seminar-workshop designed to empower high school students and teachers in Barangay Irawan, Puerto Princesa City, held on November 13, 2024, at Irawan National High School. The “Seminar-Workshop on Opportunity Seeking” aimed to equip participants with practical skills in identifying and pursuing viable business opportunities. The activity was part of the Extension Program on Value-Added and Technology Enterprise Development (VAPTED), facilitated by the Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurship (BSE) program.
A total of 73 participants comprised senior high school students under the Accountancy, Business, and Management (ABM) track. The workshop focused on helping participants assess business opportunities, identify feasible small enterprise models, and explore strategies for starting and sustaining community-based businesses. The activity was particularly relevant to Irawan’s local context, where many residents rely on agriculture and small-scale trade for their livelihood.

The seminar was facilitated by experts from WPU’s College of Public Administration and Management, including Mr. Ariel S. Dulay, Ms. Ma. Leah C. Lopez, and Mr. Junaid A. Pata. They shared insights on business opportunity assessment, enterprise planning, and the importance of collaboration with government and private organizations to support entrepreneurship. Interactive discussions encouraged participants to develop and present their own business ideas—ranging from food processing to offering internet services for underserved areas in Irawan.
Participants expressed strong appreciation for the training, with 98% rating the activity as excellent. Many highlighted the hands-on exercises, practical examples, and opportunity for community networking as valuable learning experiences. The event concluded with a certificate awarding ceremony and a photo opportunity to celebrate the successful partnership among WPU, Irawan National High School, and the local community.

Through this initiative, WPU continues to strengthen its role as a catalyst for local development and capacity building. By empowering young people and educators with entrepreneurial knowledge and practical skills, the university contributes to creating resilient, self-reliant, and business-oriented communities—advancing its mission of being a strong partner for sustainable development.
