As part of its commitment toward achieving the #GlobalGoals2030, Western Philippines University (WPU) has made sustainability education a core part of its curriculum across all programs, equipping students with knowledge of the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). With instructors integrating SDG-focused discussions and lectures in the class, students are made familiar with the goals and let them realize how they can help address the pressing concerns of the community.
Beyond the classroom, WPU takes proactive steps in addressing local and global challenges through extensive research and extension programs in collaboration with local and international partners. These initiatives range from community-driven projects in Palawan to impactful partnerships addressing broader sustainability concerns. Through research and outreach, WPU tackles issues such as poverty, food security, livelihood, and environmental conservation, aligning its work closely with SDG objectives to promote meaningful, sustainable development within communities.
To make SDG information accessible and continuously visible, WPU has established SDG Bulletins and SDG Corners throughout its campuses, reinforcing the university’s commitment to sustainability education and social responsibility. A dedicated SDG Center showcasing the university’s initiatives for each goal is also published on the WPU website. Through these comprehensive efforts, WPU promotes a culture of sustainability that prepares students and communities alike to make impactful contributions locally and globally, strengthening the university’s role as a key player in sustainable development.
