In a recent breakthrough for environmental sustainability and community empowerment, Rio Tuba Nickel Mining Corporation (RTN), in partnership with Western Philippines University’s Department of Agricultural Biosystems Engineering, successfully produced its first “coconet” and “cocolog” using newly acquired production equipment developed by the university. These eco-friendly materials, crafted from locally sourced coconut husk, represent an innovative approach to supporting ecological restoration and promoting green technologies.
To kickstart the project, RTN organized a three-day hands-on training from August 28 to 30, 2023, focused on Coconut Husk Processing. This training brought together 44 participants, including representatives from RTN’s Environment Department, the RTN Workers’ Union, and members of the Women and Coconut Farmers Association from Barangays Rio Tuba, Sandoval, and Iwahig. Through the workshop, participants learned valuable skills to transform abundant coconut husks into “coconet” and “cocolog,” which are highly effective in soil stabilization and erosion control.
The training, led by experts from WPU’s Department of Agricultural Biosystems Engineering, highlighted the untapped potential of coconut husk, a readily available local resource. By transforming it into materials for greening and rehabilitation projects, RTN and WPU aim to provide a sustainable alternative to synthetic erosion control materials, thereby reducing environmental impact and promoting a circular economy. This initiative not only empowers communities by providing new livelihood opportunities but also reinforces local involvement in environmental conservation.
Through this joint effort, RTN and WPU are not only fostering a sustainable and resilient community but also demonstrating the critical role of locally-led green initiatives in addressing environmental challenges. This collaborative project offers a promising model for how accessible technology and community training can transform traditional agricultural resources into practical tools for environmental protection and rehabilitation.
