The Western Philippines University (WPU) has commenced a two-day Futures Thinking Seminar-Workshop today, August 27, at the AV Hall, Puerto Princesa City Campus.

This initiative aims to equip WPU leaders and innovators with the necessary tools to navigate the complexities of the future, not only within the education sector but also across various emerging fields.

The event opened with presentations from notable speakers including Hon. Emmanuel de Guia, the resident futurist of the Senate Committee on SDGs, Innovation, and Futures Thinking, representing Senator Pia Cayetano, and Dr. Jalaine Joyce V. Malabanan from the PUP Open University. Their discussions focused on key trends and challenges that WPU must consider to embrace a forward-thinking mindset in the face of rapid technological advancements and societal changes. They also highlighted the critical importance of integrating decolonization into the university’s strategic planning processes.

WPU President Amabel S. Liao expressed her optimism about the seminar, stating that it would enable the university community to visualize and frame the future of WPU “by using the wisdom of the past in the present time” to shape history in the years to come.

This afternoon, WPU officials are scheduled to present their output from the Trends Mapping and Scenario Development Workshop. The seminar will continue tomorrow with further training sessions led by former CHED Commissioner Dr. Ruperto Sangalang, who will serve as the resource speaker.
